On Tuesday, August 28th, Amazon provided local leaders a sneak peak of their new Monroe fulfillment center.

Amazon General Manager Jane Tschanen kicked off the tour with a some stats on the company’s first fulfillment center in southern Ohio, saying "The building is approximately 1.3 million square feet and it can hold approximately 23 football fields!"

More than 3 million pounds of steel, and 24,000 cubic yards of concrete went into building the facility. For reference, that much steel weighs about the same as 5 million bowls of Skyline chili, and the concrete could fill 7 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

"It's incredible to think about the impact the Monroe Amazon facility will have on our community," said Monroe City Manager Bill Brock.  "As they start operations, we're excited to have them as a corporate citizen and see where their innovation leads the region."

To construct this fulfillment center, a variety of local firms were hired, contributing to hundreds of construction jobs right here in the greater Cincinnati area.

The fulfillment center, slated to launch in 2019, will employee 1,000 full-time employees, with great benefits starting on day one, and join a network of fulfillment centers in Columbus (Obetz and Etna) and Cleveland (North Randall), Ohio. Associates at the facility will pick, pack and ship larger customer items such as sports equipment, patio furniture, gardening tools, kayaks and pet food.

Amazon’s Tschanen also said, “We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from local county, state and community leaders. Monroe and our many invaluable partners in the greater Cincinnati and Dayton regions have been supportive of this project and the jobs, good wages, and great benefits we will bring to the region.”

Amazon has created more than 6,000 full-time jobs in Ohio and invested more than $3 billion in the state since 2011, both in customer fulfillment infrastructure and compensation to its employees in the state. Using methodology developed by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, Amazon estimates its investments in Ohio have created an additional 15,000 indirect jobs on top of the company’s direct hires.

Amazon’s fulfillment network supports millions of businesses of all sizes worldwide through our Fulfillment By Amazon offering. There are more than 55,000 small businesses, authors, sellers, and developers in Ohio growing their businesses and reaching new customers on Amazon products and services.
