What;s bad about it.

He did what any human being would do with his hands full.

NO president is immune. Stop bashing Obama for nothing and making a big deal out of everything.

If Obama came out Pro-Breathing - can you imagine how many people would die of suffocation?

There is nothing in his non salute hand, besides him fumbling with his button on his jacket.

Also if he didn't have his army of blind followers he would have had a new address by now.

Thanks I think, though I also think you kind of lump mine, jrock and cmsquare's responses together and get confused who said what. Since I finally did just move into DC proper (from Maryland), I will take it as a compliment!

Anyway, I was mostly trying to be funny at the same time pointing out how dumb of a "controversy" this is. No President ever did it before 1980!

Is this RELEVANT???  To WHAT????  This is a fatuous topic that has no significance!!  If a "half-hearted" salute is the most disturbing thing we can flap our lips about, we are a nation of fools!

Longstanding tradition requires members of the military to salute the president. The practice of presidents returning that salute is more recent — Ronald Reagan started it in 1981.

Reagan’s decision raised eyebrows at the time. Dwight Eisenhower, a former five-star general, did not return military salutes while president. Nor had other presidents.

John Kline, then Reagan’s military aide advised him that it went against military protocol for presidents to return salutes.
The debate over saluting has persisted, with some arguing against it for protocol reasons, others saying it represents an increasing militarization of the civilian presidency.
“The gesture is of course quite wrong: Such a salute has always required the wearing of a uniform,” author and historian John Lukacs wrote in The New York Times in 2003.

Reagan, as usual, was wrong.   Imagine that.   A hollywood actor was wrong.

Don't get me started on that trickle down theory. Lol

ehhhhh I think it's more that everyone sees this as a really stupid "controversy"

I have a long list of grievances against him as President. But I'm not going to get all upset over something silly like this.

Here's the thing if your going to salute do it correctly and if your not then don't do it half ass just walk off and nod your head.

It's not stupid controversy if you were ever in the military.

What a laugh!!  If you have read ANY of my posts, you know that I am most certainly NOT a defender of Barrack Obama!!
Matt is right... I just feel this is a really stupid "NON-controversy".  There are, in my opinion, so many other issues over which  we could  frenetically flutter our fingers.
I have two veteran sons, neither of whom are particularly disturbed by this as they also see greater issues.  And they would prefer that NO president (or any other person NOT IN UNIFORM!) salute the military!  None of them do it correctly!

As a veteran myself I would say if you can't do it right don't do it at all

Or get rid of it altogether and make it a non issue, but it has happened because he half wacked it

He was saluting for the both of them. Very endearing to our troops. Especially those who love dogs.

Not sure if you love coffee a coffee salute as quite as endearing.

The problem now is that if this president or a future president stopped saluting (because it IS inappropriate) there would be some who would be outraged at the " disrespect"!

I have no dog--or coffee---in this fight, but why is it inappropriate? I'm not here to argue, just curious.

I thought saluting was just for military, past and present. I would never think to salute someone in the military.

My Dad had a military funeral and it seemed even the priest was saluted and saluted back!

I always thought the President ( past and present) was showing respect with their salute.

So if the President is the COMMANDER IN CHIEF, why is is inappropriate to salute? I'm actually curious, politics and opinions aside.

I agree that Presidents shouldn't salute. None of them did before Reagan and when he started, a lot of people were initially uncomfortable with it.

Dwight D Eisenhower never saluted troops while he was President. Him, GW and Grant (probably Taylor too) probably were the most qualified to but to the best of anyone's knowledge, they never did.

From my recollection, I don't remember them ever saluting with a styrofoam cup of coffee in their hands either.Big smile

Members of the Military salute other Military personnel in uniform, with the exceptions in 1.6.1.1 of the AFI (and also in other branch official directives) posted by Zapp above. (which includes the President, V.P., etc) Although he is "The Commander-in Chief",  the President is NOT a sworn member of the Military and does not wear a uniform, he therefore is not (has never been) required to return the salute of uniformed military personnel.
Reagan, who had served in WWII, thought returning the salute was a sign of respect.  He was advised NOT do so by his military advisor.  Reagan subsequently asked the Marine Commandant if he could salute the troops.  The Commandant replied that since he was the president, he could do anything he wanted to.
Reagan took that as an official OK.
