Not a Single New York Congressional Democrat Has Endorsed Gillibrand
Where is the love?

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) has the backing of the entire New Jersey Democrat congressional delegation. The same is true for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), albeit in a much smaller state. Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Kamala Harris (D-CA) have the backing of a handful of congressional Democrats from their states.

But one Democrat running for president in 2020 hasn’t earned the support from a single home-state congressional colleague: Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).

Technically, Gillibrand’s campaign is still in its exploratory phase. And it’s possible Gillibrand is actually holding back such endorsements until the best strategic moment. But it also raises questions about what the New York senator’s winning coalition might look like.

“No one seems to be willing to stick their neck out” for Gillibrand, according to Rebecca Katz, a New York-based Democratic consultant.

When asked about Gillibrand, some are willing to admit she’s “working hard,” while other say it’s “too early,” and still others say they’re waiting to see who else gets in.

“She’s working hard, she’s been going into South Carolina, New Hampshire and Iowa,” said Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., of the early primary states.

“It’s too early to make any kind of decisive commitment without knowing the full lay of the land,” [Rep. Brian] Higgins told the politics website. “It’s early and there’s seemingly new candidates coming in every single day.”

New York Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks told the site it was too early and that “I don’t know all the candidates yet. I’m going to wait to see who all of the candidates are.”

These aren’t exactly ringing endorsements of their colleague. If Gillibrand transitions from the exploratory phase into a full-fledged campaign, she’ll need to lock down some support from the people who, in theory, should know her best, if she hopes to make inroads in early primary states.
