Dave Bauer, a longtime teacher, coach and administrator in Butler County, died Thursday morning.

Bauer was diagnosed with kidney cancer in April, 2012, but continued working as Monroe High School’s athletic director and retired last June.

The 1974 Garfield High School graduate coached basketball at Ross (he was a junior high coach when the Rams won the 1980 Class AA state title), Fairfield and Edgewood, directing the varsity at the latter two schools.

Bauer’s head coaching career started in January, 1995, after Ron Chasteen died suddenly during the 1994-95 campaign at Fairfield. He was a varsity assistant at the time of Chasteen’s death.

Bauer had a 64-56 record in five-plus seasons at Fairfield and was 12-30 in two years (2000-01 and 2001-02) at Edgewood.

He was also on Fairfield’s football staff when the Indians captured the 1986 Division I crown.

Bauer spent the bulk of his educational career at Fairfield and was the AD at Monroe for six years. He was inducted into the Hamilton City Schools Athletic Hall of Fame is 2006.

Bauer is survived by his wife, Mindy, and two children, Jay and Kelcey.
